An anaerobic digestion (AD) project planned for a dairy farm in Massey

An anaerobic digestion (AD) project planned for a dairy farm in Massey, Md., will convert dairy manure and local food waste substrates into renewable compressed natural gas.

Through an agreement between Homeland Biogas Energy, a subsidiary of Homeland Renewable Energy, and The Jones Family Farm, a dairy and farming operation in Massey, Homeland Biogas Energy will design, build and operate the 700 million-Btu-per-day project. The above-ground complete mix digester will help manage manure from the 2,000-cow dairy farm, allowing portions of the liquid digestate effluent to be used as fertilizer and the solid digestate effluent to be sold in the region as a soil amendment. Homeland Biogas Energy intends to sell the renewable compressed natural gas (RCNG) for use in transport trucks throughout the region.

“This is another in a long list of anaerobic digester projects we are developing throughout the country,” said James Potter, president and chief operating officer.

Sean Jones, owner of The Jones Family Farm, said he is looking forward to working with Potter’s team to achieve the environmental benefits that come with an AD facility. The partnership between Jones and Potter was formed through the Chester River Association’s Agricultural Program, a Maryland-based healthy farming advocacy group that promotes solutions to agricultural challenges for farmers.

The biogas produced at the farm in Massey may also play a role in another project currently under development by Potter. Fibrowatt, a poultry-to-power subsidiary of Homeland Renewable Energy, in partnership with Perdue Agribusiness, is currently awaiting a decision from the state of Maryland regarding a poultry litter power facility. Through the partnership, Fibrowatt will run the facility and Perdue will supply the feedstock. The two companies submitted the project through Maryland’s Clean Bay Power request for proposals. If it is selected and developed, the RCNG produced at The Jones Family Farm could be used to fuel the transport trucks that haul poultry litter and other biomass residues to the power production facility.

“We know from our experience in developing, constructing and operating our plants that the application of clean, efficient combustion technology is the right solution for managing poultry litter, and deploying anaerobic digesters is the right solution for creating energy from dairy manure,” Potter said.

Now fast forward to 2012, dozens of waste water treatment plants are being retrofitted and redesigned as Bio Gas Fuel Cells which produce electricity to power their own operations.   Fields of biogas creating algae are being grown in the Arizona Desert and in other places around the planet.  This biogas can be chemically “perfected” to run certain types of fuel cells.  Hence, we have what can be viewed as a truly renewable energy source.  In this scenario, I believe fuel cells rank well as a true green energy solution.
Could the traditional oil/gas fields worldwide be replaced by “new fields” which produce a new fuel type created in abundance by biofuel producing algae?  Time will tell.

Intelligent machines, electric cars, biogas power in the basement: millions of mini-power plants, instead of centralised energy sources, are to lead Germany through the energy revolution. Spiegel-Online heralds the new super-industries and shows that the balance of power between consumers and utilities is shifting.

The power grid of the future is one of humanity’s boldest visions. Gigantic wind farms on the sea and ginormous solar fields in the desert are to generate the bulk of our power in future. But consumers and companies are also producing energy with mini-power plants in their very own basements and solar panels on the roof. And intelligent appliances are saving energy in our homes: communicating washers, dryers and refrigerators that wash, dry or cool when electricity is cheapest.

The electric era is immediately at hand in six regions of Germany: the technology of the future is going to be tested, under the label E-Energy, in several cities. It is estimated that more efficient power supply management could save 10 terawatt-hours (i.e. a billion kWh) of energy a year, which corresponds to the annual consumption of 2.5 million households. Industry experts are urging Germany to spearhead this future market. But there is plenty of competition: the International Energy Agency expects to see investments of several billion dollars worldwide by 2030 in projects to generate electricity, manage consumption and modernise power grids.

Private homes, energy suppliers of the future

In early September, carmaker Volkswagen and powerhouse Lichtblick launched their first major offensive on the national power grid: the two companies intend to put up to 100,000 combined heat and power units (CHPs) in the basements of regular blocks of flats. They will be fired by natural gas, later on possibly by biogas.

This model transforms the consumer into a producer who can make some money in the energy market. They are also testing a pricing model in which electric rates depend on supply and demand: when the amount of available energy goes down, the rates go up. Users can monitor the system on an Internet portal and generate energy whenever the price peaks – thereby also stabilising the overall supply.

Customers will be able to cut their electric bills, moreover, by pinpointing off-peak hours to run their energy-intensive machines. This sort of energy management is the main prerequisite for a power grid running largely on renewable energy. Supply and demand have to be tightly controlled to keep the grid from crashing. If millions of small power stations are feeding the mains with a fluctuating quantity of electricity, and millions upon millions of terminal devices and home management systems are transmitting energy consumption data or receiving commands, the grid operators’ systems could go haywire. The power transmission has to be continually adjusted at millisecond intervals.

An intelligent power grid

That is why setting up such an intelligent power grid is probably the biggest challenge of the new electric era – and one of the most lucrative markets. The hitherto dominant energy giants are suddenly faced with new and formidable foes: technology groups keen on seizing control over energy supplies on the Internet. Siemens CEO Peter Löscher puts the volume of the smart grid market at €30 billion up to the year 2014.

A market in which energy is traded according to supply and demand will provide immense opportunities for service-providers and startups. Some are developing systems to predict rate fluctuations based on weather forecasts and behavioural statistics. Mobile software, e.g. iPhone-Apps, are likely to figure prominently in this sector.

Resourceful start-ups can also come up with business innovations for an energy grid 2.0, e.g. setting up social networks to help and hone ecological householding. In the US, a new generation of startups is already sounding the clarion call to an ecological revolution on the Web. Web visionaries say the Net has the potential to revolutionise the way we think about the environment: For one thing, it can bring invisible waste and pollution to light. Secondly, it can bring wasters and polluters out of the closet. That should give rise to a collective environmental conscience, forcing us to think more critically about how we use energy.

Previously we wrote about some of the most interesting DIY inventions and here is another interesting example - a device called Solaron.
The electric reverse tricycle (two wheels at the front and one at the back) built by Farrukh Khan, a designer from University of Engineering and Technology Lahore in Pakistan, is powered by solar energy and costs only $600.
Currently the student is still working on improving certain features of its trike, but soon the vehicle is expected to be launched onto the market.
The student managed to build his eco-friendly vehicle is just 18 days. Solaron measures 2.13 x 1.06 x 1.37 meters (7 x 3.5 x 4.5 ft) and weights 60 kg (132 pound). It includes a t-shaped framework made of aluminum mounted at the front, and the back part of the vehicle, behind the seating area, is made of an old bicycle frame.

In addition, the vehicle boasts a 40 watt photovoltaic canopy mounted above the rider. It was installed to charge the onboard 12v/80Ah dry cell solar battery that powers a 24 volts electric motor. The latter turns the back wheel through a chain and several sprockets.
According to the inventor, his vehicle can reach a top speed of 30 kph (20 mph) and travel about 70 km (43 miles) on a single charge. The whole project cost the young man PKR 46,670 ($540).

It would be interesting to note that the young inventor has developed a detailed guide on how to build such a vehicle. The instructions were posted online so people could build their own variant of a solar-powered tricycle.

@muddymuddymuddmann I saw a guy rewire a motor with a whole bunch of phases to become a generator or alternator or something not quite sure but any how it would produce electricity instead of using it. well used some while it produced some anyway. Sorry I ll get to the point I m getting to is he got rid of all the grease no grease at all it makes too much drag. he used light machine oil only. it would really spin good then. oh well you should try it with out grease it will spin like the dickens.

@muddymuddymuddmann I'll pass a little tip Scott, I use Royal Purple synthetic grease for my bearings, yeah it cost's more but it's superior and offers long life with much less friction. It may help in low wind conditions if one is looking to squeeze out max electrons if someone wants to pick at small details. Carry on and git that thing up in the sky will ya!

Great to see this good work. May be advisable to add a mechanical attachment, a dome allen screw or three so as there is thermal expansion & contraction between the GRP resin & magnet & cast steel brake disc, so the disc does not shed the whole set up affer a heavy frost or a very hot day. Or may be some light twine, threaded through the vanes of the disc & across the resin.....dacron or may be dental floss and finish of with a coat of super glue, to fix the knots.

I HAVE SEEN WHERE PEOPLE PUT SOME FIBER CLOTH AROUND THE OUTER EDGE AND CAST IT IN ON ROTORS THAT DONT HAVE THE 1/8th LIP. THERE ARE ALSO MAGNETS THAT ARE PREDRILLED SO YOU CAN BOLT THEM DOWN. THERE WONT BE ENOUGH RPMS ON A TEN FOOT PROP TO OVERPOWER THE MAGNETIC FLUX.

A RELAY WITH A RESISTOR IN SERIES WITH THE ACTUATOR COIL TO STRIGGER THE RELAY AT A SPECIFIC VOLTAGE AND HEAVY DC CONTACTS WITH A CAPACITOR PARALLELED ACROSS THE CONTACTS ,(TO MINIMIZE THE SPARKIN OR ARCING), CAN WORK WELL.   1. The surface of a pencil lead is rubbed lightly by the sandpaper. Three holes are made for the cap of PET bottle. Two leads of the pencil are passed through two holes.
  2. The ends of pencil leads are brought close well.
  3. The salt of 2-3 big spoons is put in water 500ml, and pour it inthe PET bottle.The cap is sealed and the leads are dipped in the salt water.

1. General Remarks

Due to the advance of knowledge gained by various independent designers it is basically easy to build Parabolic Solar Cookers, which can boil water, cook soup, make fried foods or even bake bread. What is needed is general work-man's skills like some carpenter's skills and/or some construction worker's skills, about 10-50 USD money to buy materials, (and possibly some elementary knowledge of mathematics and physics,) but mainly a lot of common sense!

2. The General Principle: How Does it Work?

A focusing solar cooker works by reflecting solar radiation to a small area, where your cooking or baking pot is located. The cooking pot should be as black as possible to absorb the sun's radiation so that the energy is transformed into heat.

The principle is shown in the next picture: Under cloudless bright sky during day time  the power of sun radiation is about 1 kW/1 square meter(!). That is more than the power of a normal gas stove or a normal electric hot plate. If all that energy could be reflected from the collector's surface and transformed into heat in a kettle holding 1 liter cold water, the water would boil in 5-10 minutes depending on the starting temperature of the water.



NOTE:

If a good reflective surface is used for the concentrator and it will be well made, the focus point will be very hot and more dangerous than a fire especially for eyes. So these instructions are made for experienced and cautious persons only. As a design principle it is best to keep the focus point inside 'the mirror cup' to avoid the danger of anything else besides your cooking pot of getting in touch with the hot spot.

In practice not all of the sun radiation is reflected from our 'Reflective Surface' and not all of the reflected energy is absorbed by our kettle or baked bread and transformed into heat and so the efficiency of our cooker is not 100% and we need in general more power and thus area for our mirror.

In general good focusing solar cookers have got about 1,5- 2 square m reflective area.


3. The Basic Parts and Materials of the Cooker

To build a cooker we need something to build: the mirror base for the reflective material, the reflective material itself, the adjusting and holding construction for the mirror the pot holder and the cooking pot.

In the next picture the parts are shown for a model cooker.



The mirror base can be made of various materials including paper mass, concrete, plywood, bamboo-clay, metal.

For the reflective surface small mirror pieces, aluminum foil, polished metal plates can be used.

The mirror holding and the pot-holding systems can be made of metal, wood, plywood, bamboo.


4. The Mirror Base in Detail

4.1. The Mirror Base: the shape of the mirror

Basically the perfect shape for our mirror is a parabolic shape. The mathematical formula for a parabola is

Y = (X*X)*(1/4F), (), where F is the distance of the focus point from the bottom.

If in the formula F = 50 cm calculations become very easy and our mirror base will have quite satisfactory shape. We can count first points for each 10 cm distance from the center and then some points in between. It will be quite easy to get a satisfying curve drawn using a bent metallic or plastic ruler to interpolate all points in between. And the curve will look as follows and the points calculated are in the table.

4.2. Mirror base materials and construction ideas

It is best to use materials, which are cheapest or easiest locally available.

The local traditional handicraft skills should be taken into the construction consideration as well! For example, if people are used to weave baskets of bamboo, it is probably easiest to make the mirror base(s) so that instead of using ferro-concrete you will use bamboo-clay. That means you will have a big nearly parabolic basket made and fill the inside with (mud) clay to make it really parabolic using the methods as shown below.

4.3. Paper mass (papier mache), clay or concrete construction

a1) Making the mold inside the ground

If you will use paper mass (mache), clay or concrete, it is best to make first a mold. That can be then used to make as many mirror bases as you want. The concrete mold can be made by casting inside the ground, if the ground is easy to dig and to make smooth. Using this method you will first make a steel mold as follows. The steel mold can be made of cheap steel. For construction you can use welding or bolts to join the parts.





Here are some pictures concerning how to make the concrete (or a clay) mold. You'll make first a parabolic hole using the steel mold, then you'll make an iron net. You have to put old newspapers under your casting.











You can use an exactly similar mold to make your mirror base of clay as well (put inside a net made of bamboo for example) or of concrete (put inside an iron net)

a2) Making the mold on the ground

You can often make the mold easier by building the mold on the ground.

4.4. Other methods how to make the mirror base

The first construction below is for a blacksmith, the second for a carpenter. The second plan can be used to make the mirror base of cardboard as well:

Note 1: If you are best with plywood or plywood is the material, which is easiest and cheapest available, it is probably best and easiest to use the above design ideas combined. Just make only two 'supporters' like in the picture above and use them as 'the X-bars' as in 'the steel construction'. Make 'the rings' (of 'the steel construction') as well of narrow strips of plywood. Fix the sectors on 'the rings' using for example thin rope through holes on sectors like in 'the steel construction' (to make them easily changeable as well).

Note 2: The sectors have no need to continue to the middle of the mirror base, because there will anyway be the shadow of the kettle. You can leave a hole in the middle.

Note 3: It is much easier to glue some kind of foil on the top of plywood than on the top of metal sectors or on the clay. If clay is used as the material for the mirror base, it is best to glue some paper in between the foil and the clay surface.

4.5. Some further notes concerning the shape

Some good cookers use long-distance focus to reflect all the sun rays to the bottom of the pot. This is a very effective design, because then very little of the reflected light is reflected out of the pot again. How well you ever will manage to make your pots blackened, some of the sun rays will be reflected out of the pot's sides, if they will hit the sides with small angles. A well-known example of this is the Chinese cooker, which is widely used in Tibet. See a picture for example: http://www.jyu.fi/~hvirtane/chin2.html in the Internet. Badly made reflectors using such focusing outside the 'mirror-cup' might be sometimes dangerous, however, so this kind of design is not being instructed here.

One further point to note is that in some cases your reflector will become big and awkward to handle, if you'll preserve the circular shape. To make the life easier, you can make cutouts from the sides, from suitable places to make cooking easier for example or to make it possible to turn the whole mirror around. The important things are to keep the total area of mirror for sunrays big enough (1,5 square meters - 2 square meters), and to keep all the reflective surface on the parabolic surface. 5. Hanging the mirror

You need to fix the mirror to the mirror holding system such way that the mirror can be turned around the focus point, where the cooking pot is to be located. This adjustment is necessary to get the mirror facing directly to the sun according to 'the sun's height on the sky'. The whole mirror holder can be turned around on the horizontal plane to make the other necessary adjustments according the sun's movement on the sky.

The next picture shows a method how to get the mirror fixed to the mirror-holder / pot-holder.



6. The mirror holding system

The next picture is to show an easy way how to build the whole mirror holding system of various materials. The pot-holder must be located in the focus point of the mirror. To turn the mirror on the mirror-holder/pot-holder you can use a rope, which is fixed to the edge of the mirror and to the side-bar respectively.




7. The turning table

The next picture is to show how to build the system for turning the whole cooker around on the horizontal plane. Instead of putting the outside tube inside the ground you can make three legs for it so that the whole cooker can be moved easily to another location.




8. The adjusting rope

To adjust with the rope the mirror it is good to make a proper fixing for the other end of the rope. The other end can be permanently fixed.




9. The direction indicator

To see that the cooker is adjusted correctly you'll need some kind of indicator. Here is an easy method.




10. The reflective surface

If you will make the mirror base of paper mass (papier mache), you might want to use metallic reflectors to make the mirror strong. If you have got really good aluminum or stainless steel, you might use that on a clay or concrete mirror base as well.

The following picture will show in general the method how to make and fix the reflective pieces.

The picture concerning making the reflective surface of foils shows another idea, which kind of plates to use.



In many cases the reflective surface will be made of aluminum foil or of something rather similar.



You can use small mirror pieces as well.





11. The mirror-holder/pot-holder

The mirror-holder, which is to be used as the grate for cooking pots is an easy piece.




12. The pots and the hay-box

There are some good ideas available to be combined with solar cooking. Often you will make such kind of food, which will prepare itself well, if you only make it boiling by using the cooker and then insert the pot inside a thermally insulated box for further preparing. You can make such a hay-box of almost any type of box by wrapping it inside by a thick cloth or hay or straw, or... just wrapping the pot outside by a thick cloth. Then the cooker is ready for another pot containing more of the same food or some other kind of food.

Looks like a good start. I've watched a few utube vids on making a stator, but I don't completely understand them. Number of winds, wire gauge, magnets, I get lost trying to figure out how many watts they're supposed to make.

Also, I think you should make a VAWT. They have certain drawbacks, but it seems they're more acceptable in suburban neighborhoods.

@SurvivalWithBushcraf THANKS, I HAVE VERY LITTLE TIME LATELY, BUT I AM VERY GLAD TO PUT THEM OUT WHEN I GET THE CHANCE. SOME MORE VIDEO IS IN THE EDITING STAGE RIGHT NOW. THE NEXT VIDEO COMPLETES THE WINDER. THEN WE GET TO WIND COILS AND CAST THE STATOR. I CANT WAIT.
